Q: How can you improve SEO results using the time and investment you're already making?
A: Apply the 'Rule of 80/20' to you SEO efforts for greater efficiency and better SEO results.
The 'Rule of 80/20', also known as 'Pareto's Law' or "the law of the vital few and trivial many" states that you will achieve 80% of your objectives from 20% of your efforts. Vilfredo Pareto was a 19th century economist who noted that 80% of Italy's land was owned by about 20% of its population, and applied that balance to a wide range of socio-economic theories. The ration of 80/20 has been demonstrated as a successful approach to identifying productivity and improving efficiency for input/output processes in virtually every industry.
Examples of this theory in action:
- 20% of your products will generate 80% of your income
- 20% of your customers will produce 80% of your revenues
- 20% of your tasks will consume 80% of your time
- 20% of your employees will generate 80% of your productivity
- 20% of your products will take up 80% of your inventory
Applying the 'Rule of 80/20' to your SEO Strategies: Now that you understand the 'Rule of 80/20', let's take a look at how it can be applied to improving your SEO tactics:
- 20% of your keywords will produce 80% of your results: identify which keywords these are and expand the amount of content that contains these keywords
- 20% of your Adwords campaigns will produce 80% of your results: start your Google Adwords approach with at least 10 simultaneous campaigns: pick out the top two performers and ditch the rest.
- 20% of your pages will attract 80% of your viewership: place important sales messages and 'calls to action' on these pages, and assess what is working on these pages and expand them to other pages.
- 80% of your conversions will come from 20% of your sources: identify these sources and fortify your presence on these sources to attract more converting visitors.
- 80% of your purchases will come from 20% of your customers: identify these customers and give them further incentive to buy at your site
This is just a start, but it goes to show that by focusing on the 'Rule of 80/20', you can maximize the output of your SEO marketing strategies, and quickly improve SEO rankings using what you're already doing.
